The top 9 airports in the world
For this year, Skytrax has again prepared a list of the best airports according to air passengers. Among the best were some of the Asian airports, followed by European airports with two places in the top 9.
9. Narita International Airport — Japan
Annual number of passengers: 42.6 million
Place in 2018: 11.
Features: As much as 50% of all international air passenger transport in Japan takes place through Narita Airport. The airport is one of the few that is closed between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am to reduce noise in the surrounding area. The runway of the airport is 4,000m long, making it the longest in Japan.
8. London Heathrow Airport — Great Britain
Annual number of passengers: 80.1 million
Place in 2018: 8.
Features: Heathrow is London’s largest airport and it can be compared to the largest in the world in terms of traffic. It is the most visited European airport in terms of the number of passengers. Its beginnings go back to 1929, when a small airport called “Great West Airport” was established here.
7. Munich Airport — Germany
Annual number of passengers: 46.3 million
Place in 2018: 6.
Features: Voters have chosen Munich Airport as the best airport in Europe. Since February 2017, it has been possible to fly to 266 destinations around the world, placing it right at the top in terms of flight options. The airport also serves as the headquarters of Star Alliance and the Lufthansa Airline.
6. Chubu Centrair International Airport — Japan
Annual number of passengers: 9.8 million
Place in 2018: 7.
Features: Chubu Centrair International Airport is built on an artificial island near the city of Nagoya. The airport was awarded first prize in 2015 for the best regional airport in the world.
5. Hong Kong International Airport — Hong Kong
Annual number of passengers: 74.5 million
Place in 2018: 4.
Features: This airport was also built on an artificial island near the coast of Hong Kong. Hong Kong International Airport serves as a gateway to China and other parts of Asia. There are approximately 65,000 people employed at the airport.
4. Hamad International Airport — Qatar
Annual number of passengers: 34.5 million
Place in 2018: 5.
Features: The beginnings of the construction of Hamad Airport date back to 2005. The construction was delayed for almost 10 years and thus its operation only started in 2014. The total construction of the airport cost as much as $16 billion. According to some, the terminals are the most luxurious building in the world and one of the greatest architectural achievements in the context of airports.
3. Incheon International Airport — South Korea
Annual number of passengers: 68.4 million
Place in 2018: 2.
Features: The most prestigious South Korean airport boasts exceptional performance. Only 0.0001% of the luggage is misplaced, which places it at the very top of the global list. There are shops, restaurants and even a museum of Korean culture.
2. Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) — Japan
Annual number of passengers: 87.1 million
Place in 2018: 3.
Features: It is the fourth most visited airport in the world and one of the most important in Japan. It is known primarily for its cleanliness and effectiveness. At the airport, you can also find traditional houses containing small shops.

Annual number of passengers: 65.6 million
Place in 2018: 1.
Features: The airport has been chosen for the seventh time as the best airport in the world, which says a lot about its quality.
